"Thirty years ago, growing up in New Zealand, I often sliced into a brown berry that looked like a duck's egg in a bristly hair shirt. Repulsive? Not really, for I knew a secret: The berry's odd appearance disguised an equally exotic interior, a sun-burst of neat white streaks radiating from a cream-colored core, past tiny black seeds and into shimmering green flesh. Sweet-tart in taste, it seemed a succulent blend of strawberry, banana, melon, and pineapple flavors. Delicious! I loved the kiwifruit." -Dr. Noel D. Vietmeyer, National Geographic, 1987.
Kiwifruit is always a favourite at our house- the kids will fight over a bowlful, my husband eats them with the skin on, and I always cut them in half and scoop out its lovely flesh with a spoon.
I snapped this shot today, while absolutely brilliant sunshine was streaming through my kitchen window and I was getting lunch together for the kids. I did not enhance the colours- the plate is a brilliant blue to begin with and just exploded when the sunlight hit it. I really love the bright green of the fruit against the sea of blue; as I looked through my camera lens, I was reminded yet again of how I need to more fully appreciate the beauty in the everyday details of my life.
(laughing) no doubt a gorgeous photo, but i keep thinking of the phrase "prettiest poison" as i'm allergic to kiwis...fruit, anyway. not to the people or birds :-)

What a glorious photo, Moira!
I've been told that kiwi vines will grow in Seattle. I'm almost afraid to try growing them, because I would be so disappointed if they didn't do well.

..."fight over a bowlful"....I second that! Delicious fruit and is always popular on our breakfast table....(second to papayas when we're on the other side of the world) ;-)

Hi Santos,
Is it just kiwifruit that you're allergic to, or is it berries? How did you find out? Yikes! It would be pretty funny if you were allergic to Kiwis (the fruit OR the bird), though!;-)
Hi Jessica,
Thanks so much!
Hi Kimberly,
Thank you! I've read that some types of kiwifruit are quite hardy. Here's site that has some info.:

Hi Rowena,
There's nothing like eating fresh fruit in Hawaii, is there?
Hi Zarah and Giao,
Thanks a lot, girls!
